Chicago Bears have very high expectations for 09′ with the acquisition of Jay Cutler from the Denver Broncos. Jay Cutler had a terrible first game as starting quarter back for the Bears, and many believed that if this continued the Bears would be no better then an 8-8 team.
The Bears had decades of mediocre quarterbacks from Kyle Orton, Rex Grossman, Chad Hutchinson, Craig Krenzel, Jonathan Quinn, Chris Chandler, Jim Miller, Cade McNown, Shane Mathews, Rick Mirer and Steve Stenstrom – that was just in the last decade. The last ten years the Indianapolis Colts have had one starting QB, Peyton Manning.
Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman were average quarterbacks at best, and diminished the effectiveness of an amazing defensive unit and a great running game, especially after the emergence of Matt Forte.
The loss of Brian Urlacher was devastating to the Bears defense – he is the quarterback of the defense. With his loss, the rest of the Bears defense must raise their game to a whole new level if they expect to compete for a division title.
The Minnesota Vikings have more talent and experience then the Bears with Adrian Peterson and Brett Favre. If the Bears expect to beat the Vikings or even Green Bay Packers they must beat the lesser quality opponents – Detroit Lions.
On top of this was the injury of Pro Bowl defender Brian Uhrlacher, injured for the entire 2009 season. This is a crippling blow to the Bears.
RB Matt Forte will get the majority of the carries this season for the Bears. In this day and age in the NFL, typically one RB can not carry the entire load the whole season so look RB Garret Wolfe and RB Adrian Peterson to give Forte a break once awhile.
This is a make or break year really to know if WR Devin Hester will be a great receiver (if not now then when) or just another wide receiver. Hester can break any game wide open and cause trouble for any defense.
